Mental Health and Yoga

Anxiety, Depression and Emotional Imbalance are major health concerns throughout the world, including India. Over 2000 years ago, the great sage, Patanjali wrote about the 5 stages of the mind in the Yoga Sutras. They are:

Kshipta - a restless and over-stimulated mind. Often referred to as the "monkey mind." A mind that jumps from one through to the next without the ability to stop. This can show up as anxiety.

Mudha - a heavy and dull mind. This is described as lethargy. A mind that us unable to focus or engage with information. It has no energy. The body doesn't want to move. This can show up as depression.

Vikshipta - a scattered mind. This mind is easily distracted and repeatedly goes from clarity to confusion. You want to do something but get constantly distracted.

Ekagra - a focused, one-pointed mind. This mind is able to maintain attention on a single idea, thought or object, without distraction. You are in a flow.

Nirodha - a still and calm mind. You are completely present. This mind is free from agitation. It is able to maintain a continuous flow of active and passive meditation.

Patanjali goes on to teach us and give us tools to work towards Ekagara and Nirodha. He talks about the importance of Sadhana to help manage our mind.

Understanding that our mind is a critical part of our overall health and wellbeing, is not a new concept. All the Yoga and Ayurvedic texts clearly write and teach about the importance of a healthy mental state. These concepts have been tried and proven to work, for thousands of years. There are endless testimonials of body ailments being healed through the merging of the mind and the heart.

This is possible for all of us.

We can be well.

We can be fit.

We can be free.
